Left Field Visual Occulture: Reclaiming the Radical History of Fields in Contemporary English Film

This paper will explore the field as both a literal and representational site of political struggle and significance, with particular attention paid to radical and occult traditions. It will do so primarily with reference to three near-contemporary English films: Patrick Keiller's Robinson in Ruins (2010), Ben Wheatley's A Field in England (2013), and Jeremy Deller's The Battle of Orgreave (2001) .

Lewis Wynn received his BA in English from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 2014. He then studied in the Visual and Environmental Studies Department at Harvard University for a year, as a Herchel Smith Scholar. He has just completed his Mphil in Culture and Criticism - again at Emmanuel College, Cambridge - where he will shortly continue his studies as a PhD candidate. He is, otherwise, an amateur filmmaker.
